A French photographer based in Paris, from the start of her career Juliette Jourdain has specialised in the art of portraiture. Her portfolio attests to a highly personal vision of photography and to her great aptitude for staging, which she borrows from the likes of the extravagances of singer Lady Gaga, director Tim Burton, or artist Cindy Sherman. Through the construction of surrealist sets, her self-portraits focus on the creation of characters oscillating between quirkiness and elegance and question the representation of women in contemporary society.

To sublimate the female body, Ruslan Bolgov uses humour by placing two glasses on his model’s chest or playing on geometric shapes: “I wanted to try to bring together opposing elements within a single photo: the very rigid aspect of a cube and the curves of the female body,” he explains. “Then I gave it an artistic touch by playing on blacks and whites, on the background, and by adding a mask to complexify the interpretation.” The resulting photos are at once erotic and intriguing.

Some scenes were adapted from Brigitte Bardot’s own life. In the 1960s, she was both adored and hated, the subject of fantasy and hate. The filming of ‘A Very Private Affair’ narrowly missed being a disaster. The filming of a scene in Geneva scene had to be stopped when ‘Back to France whore’ was shouted out loud.

Her work published recently in Photo magazine was exhibited at the Rencontres d’Arles in July 2014 as well as at exhibitions in Lyon and Paris in 2015.

TRANSITUS ESSENCE 101 海之瞬

In the beginning, there were lines. Nothing but straight and colourful lines composing a landscape reduced to the essential: the sky and the sea. Later, spectators realise that, the more they contemplate them, the more they’ll enable them to delve into the artist’s imagination. Florian Mueller has continually explored the theme of the permanence of movement. The series Transitus is organised around the line of the horizon. This conception of the landscape like a representation of the infinite evokes the Romantic movement of the 19th century. More specifically, the background of a famous painting by German Caspar David Friedrich entitled The Monk by the Sea (1808-1810) and that aims to represent solitude and powerlessness of individuals in the face of Nature, or, on the contrary, their aspirations of Infinity. Florian Mueller inscribes his work within the tradition of tragic Romantic landscapes. Transitus Essence 101 invites us to breathe in the salty atmosphere and suffocating heat of Lantau, one of Hong Kong’s islands.
